# 🛑 It's Not Libertarianism, It's Oligarchy
That's a powerful and common critique often made by classical liberals and anti-corporate analysts. Here is a simple explanation for someone who identifies as Libertarian, arguing why the current mainstream movement often falls short of the ideal.

## 🛑 It's Not Libertarianism, It's Oligarchy
The core of genuine **Libertarianism** is about maximizing **individual liberty** and minimizing **coercion** from the state or any powerful entity. The problem with the modern, well-funded "Libertarian" movement is that it champions **one type of freedom** while actively undermining another.
### 1. The Real Goal is **NOT** Minimal Government
True Libertarianism advocates for a minimal government whose primary role is protecting individual rights and ensuring a truly free market by enforcing contracts and protecting against force/fraud.
However, the actions of the billionaire-backed movements suggest they only want a minimal government in specific areas:
* They advocate for dismantling **environmental regulations**, **consumer protections**, and **financial oversight.** These are the very rules that restrain **corporate power**—the power of the billionaires themselves.
* They **do not** advocate for dismantling the parts of government that benefit them, such as tax loopholes, corporate subsidies, or strong intellectual property laws (which Big Tech relies on to maintain monopolies).
The goal isn't minimal government; it's a **government managed exclusively for the benefit of capital owners.**
### 2. The Great Contradiction: **Freedom vs. Power**
A genuinely free market requires that individuals are free to **compete** against powerful companies. This is where the co-option fails the middle and lower classes.
* **Libertarian Promise:** Freedom from the state allows you to thrive.
* **Oligarchic Reality:** Freedom for the corporation allows them to dominate you.
If you remove all regulations, you don't get a market of equal players; you get a market where the wealthiest entities (**the monopolies, the billionaires**) are free to crush small businesses, pollute communities, suppress wages, and dominate entire industries—all without interference.
**The Simple Test:**
* If your primary policy goal is to eliminate restraints on **private power** (corporations and billionaires), you are not promoting **individual liberty** for all classes.
* You are simply replacing the coercion of the **state** with the coercion of **unrestrained capital.**
A true libertarian movement should aim to curb *all* forms of coercion, whether it comes from a government official or a dominant, unrestrained billionaire cartel. If the "Libertarian" movement only ever results in **more power for the wealthy,** it’s not libertarian; it’s just **plutocracy** wearing a libertarian mask.
